The Runaway Kitchen is intended for ‘temporary runaways’; a functional space for retreat whose aim is to give the occupants a purpose to return or move onward. Concrete is thus the chosen primary material for its heavy mass and cold appearance; a sad steady material comparable to the burden of living. Considerations of materials exposed to occupants are based on the extension of greenery onto the building as well as their effects on lighting.
Repetition is another theme running through the project due to the way the materials interact with one another. To differentiate privacy and transparency between spaces of different functions, the interval length between concrete beams/columns (the glazing) is increased or reduced.
